NBC Olympic live streams aren't live, Phelps flub indicates

A blunder during one of Michael Phelps' races Tuesday has confirmed that NBC's live stream of Olympic events is not actually live. A delay of at least a couple of seconds set up a spoiler in the outcome of Phelps' 200-meter butterfly race. With about 50 meters left in the race, the network sent out an app notification with the outcome. I was still watching Phelps swim, supposedly "live," after a notification on my iPad had already told me the race's result. Granted, the live stream was coming from NBC's Live Extra app and the notification from its NBC Olympics app, but you'd think the two would be in sync. (I mean, they even share the same logo.) The network hasn't told me exactly how long the delay is, but a member of its communications team did not deny there is a delay while speaking with me over the phone. If NBC gets back to me with more information we will post an update. I experienced another delay with the live stream Sunday during the men's 4x100-meter Russia Euro 2012 Jersey freestyle relay. While I was still watching the race, a friend of mine had already seen the results on Twitter. NBC claims select cable subscribers can live stream more than 300 Olympic events from the Live Extra app on iOS and Android as well as live stream from Live Extra on the NBCOlympics.com website. The streams are pretty close to live, but they aren't. But that isn't even the problem. There's nothing wrong with a slight delay. Getting feed from London back to the states, let alone Los Angeles, can't be easy, so this may be due to technical issues. And sometimes, people do stuff on live TV that networks have to censor, so delays Soccer Jerseys are justified in those instances too. The problem lies in the fact that it's not just Twitter beating NBC's delay but NBC itself beating it. NBC has been spoiling events left and right during its coverage of the 2012 Olympics, either on shows leading up to its prime-time coverage, on its website or on its Twitter account. But the fact that its app notifications aren't in sync with its live stream's delays is just too much.

Mac users left wondering if OS X Snow Leopard's retired

Apple's refusal to put into writing its operating system support policy leaves Snow Leopard users wondering whether their copy of OS X has been retired, security experts said today. The question "Is Snow Leopard retired?" went legitimate as soon as Apple cheap Toms Blue Canvas Women's Classics launched OS X Mountain Lion last week. That's because Apple has always dropped security update support for one edition around the time it has two newer in play. If the current OS X is dubbed "n," then "n-2" support ends at the debut of "n." In other words, patches are provided only to the newest OS X and the one immediately preceding it. With Mountain Lion's debut last Wednesday, that informal policy -- Apple has never put its support practices on paper or its website -- means the two editions that will receive patches are OS X 10.7, aka 2011's Lion, and the brand new 10.8, or Mountain Lion. Apple last shipped a Snow Leopard security update in May 2012. "I would expect that Snow Leopard is toast," said Chet Wisniewski, senior security adviser at Sophos, when asked today of his expectations. "They seem to apply that 'n-2' rule [of no security updates] somewhat universally, even when it doesn't make sense." Apple has held to the n-2 rule, although the timing of an edition's final update has varied. Last year, Apple shipped the last OS X-wide security update for Wholesale Toms Shoes Leopard (n-2), the edition released in Oct. 2007, on June 23, 2011, almost a month before the launch of Lion (n). OS X Tiger (n-2), which appeared in April 2005, received a final security update on Sept. 10, 2009, 12 days after Snow Leopard (n) shipped. Prior to that, Panther (n-2), or OS X 10.3, got its final update two-and-a-half weeks after the debut of Leopard (n), while OS X 10.2, aka Jaguar (n-2), saw its last patch three months before the launch of Tiger (n). An edition's retirement isn't comprehensive. Apple has typically delivered separate security updates for four components: iTunes, Java, QuickTime and Safari for several months beyond the cut-off.

Technology Surveys Show Americans Pro-Computers

The Internet is full of pornographic material. Shocking, I know -- water is still wet, the sun remains hot, and gravity? I just tossed a handful of popcorn out the window, and it's going strong. Despite the risk of exposure to lurid material, however, technology surveys indicate that Americans are largely in favor of the computer revolution.A love of technology, surveys suggest, transcends cultural, racial, regional and age groups. A poll by National Public Radio indicates that Americans of all stripes have a positive outlook towards the Internet and computers, despite an awareness of the potential Toms Shoes Cheap dangers, recommending instead greater governmental protection. These dangers include the aforementioned pornography, exposure to viruses, and a greater vulnerability to fraud and identity theft. Not all groups consume have the same consumption of technology, surveys showed. Three groups that were less likely to use computers were those with less education or lower income, and those over the age of 60. Only half of Americans under 60 with incomes use a computer at work, compared to 80% of those with higher incomes. Those making less were only half as likely to use an Internet connection at home. Despite the discrepancy, most Americans under 60 are using computers in large numbers. However, older Americans, indicate, are somewhat left out of the loop. They're only Wholesale Toms Classic Shoes half as likely as their younger counterparts to have ever used a computer. While there remain differences in the computer usage between groups, technology surveys indicate that people in the United States, as a whole, think that these innovations have improved their lives. While many acknowledged concerns and drawbacks, it seems computers are here to stay.

China to cut fuel prices: government

China said that it would slash fuel prices for the third time since May, after growth in the world's second largest economy slowed and softened demand. The benchmark price for petrol will drop by 5.05 percent to 7,900 yuan ($1,240) a tonne Dame Nike Free 3.0 V2 from Wednesday, said the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) -- China's top economic planning agency. The diesel price will drop 5.33 percent to 7,110 yuan per tonne, it said in a statement. The NDRC said it decided to slash the fuel prices after "taking into account price changes in the international market recently and the economic situation both at home and abroad". The cut is the third since May 10 and came after the government released Dame Nike Free 3.0 V3 data this week indicating growth in the world's second-largest economy was slowing. China reported on Monday that inflation had slowed to 2.2 percent in June, the lowest level since the start of 2010. It then said on Tuesday that growth in exports and imports had slowed in June, compared with May.

Rectangle Oreos and cucumber gum, made in China for China

SUZHOU, China (Reuters) - There are no bad ideas inside Kraft Foods' biscuit research lab in China, according to director Maggie Wang. Not even the chewing gum Oreo cookie that a colleague asked her to bite into one day. Instead of creamy white "stuff" in the centre, a glob of gum was sandwiched neatly between a pair of Oreo's iconic dark chocolate biscuits. "The taste was ok. The problem was that you could not swallow it," said Wang, a Kraft food scientist with two decades of experience in the biscuit industry. Investment may be powering the Chinese economy but experiments like the gum cookie - which, for Nike Free 7.0 Mænd better or worse, never made it to store shelves - are a reminder that consumption is rising sharply. That means it is vital for food companies to get the right products into the market, particularly with demand dimming in the United States and Europe. A survey published earlier this year by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, the largest foreign trade group in China, showed that for about three in five of its member companies, the top priority here is producing or sourcing goods in China for the Chinese market. "The stereotype is we're exporting jobs and everything's being manufactured with cheap labor and sent back, and that's not the case at all," said Kent Kedl, Managing Director of China and North Asia for the consultancy Control Risks, which collaborated on the AmCham survey. China, with its 1.3 billion people, overtook the United States as the world's biggest new car market three years ago and became the top grocery market last year. The Boston Consulting Group said in a report this week that it expects China to be the world's No. 1 market for luxury goods by 2015. A RECTANGULAR OREO KFC, a Yum! Brands chain and one of the first Western fast food restaurants to hit China in the 1980s, has long been recognized as a pioneer, with offerings like rice porridge with preserved egg along with fried chicken. But many Western companies resisted going local when they first came to China, in part because they mistakenly believed their well-known international brands would automatically succeed there. That mindset has changed, and companies now routinely tailor products or marketing campaigns. "It's probably quite hard to find examples of people who don't localize," said Paul French, chief China analyst at market research firm Mintel. BMW developed stretch sedans in China because the wealthy like to sit in the back and be chauffeured. Wrigley's sells cucumber-mint flavored sticks of gum and Haagen Dazs mooncakes have been a hit since their introduction in 1997. At the Kraft R&D facility, which is half science lab, half kitchen, researchers in white coats dabble with seasonings such as "California Cheeseburger" and "Chicken Feet With Pickled Chili". About 95 percent of the ideas that are floated never make it to market, Wang said. Some Nike Free Run 2 Mænd notable misfires: a red bean paste Oreo (kids didn't like it) and a Ritz cracker flavored like fish boiled in spicy Sichuan peppercorn oil (too local). But the trial and error can pay off, sometimes beyond China's borders. Blue jeans giant Levi Strauss & Co introduced its Denizen brand, launched in Shanghai in 2010 and designed to fit Chinese body types and trends, to the United States last year, for example. In 2006, Kraft created a rectangular Oreo wafer cookie that soon became the best selling biscuit item in China, said Shawn Warren, President of Kraft Foods China. Now it's being spiffed up for a return to the country where the famed cookie sandwich got its start 100 years ago. "We've done some tests in the U.S. and still think they need to optimize and tweak it but stay tuned and maybe we'll see it in the U.S., maybe in the not so distant future," said Warren. Some day the gum-cookie concept may even resurface, but it would probably be flipped on its head as gum that tastes like an Oreo, Wang said.

Organic tomatoes healthier than conventional plants: study

When it comes to antioxidant levels, organic tomatoes have been shown to grind conventionally grown tomatoes to a pulp. That's the conclusion of a Spanish study which found that organic tomatoes work harder for consumers as they contain higher levels of phenolic compounds, plant-based compounds that are known to carry a host of health benefits. After analyzing a species of tomatoes called Daniela, scientists from the University Nike Free Run of Barcelona identified 34 different phenolic compounds, levels of which were higher in organically grown tomatoes compared to conventionally grown plants. Published in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry, scientists explain that when tomatoes are grown without the use of fertilizers and pesticides, plants are forced to respond by activating their own defense mechanisms which increases levels of all antioxidants. "The more stress plants suffer, the more polyphenols they produce," explains study co-author Rosa M. Lamuela. Meanwhile, the jury is still out when it comes to the health benefits of organic Nike Free 3.0 produce versus conventionally grown fruits and vegetables. For example, a 2010 study published in the same journal found that organically grown onions, carrots and potatoes contained about the same levels of antioxidants compared to traditionally raised crops using pesticides and fertilizers.
